Universum Landscaping: Hortisculpture

Lower Ontario's Best 2D and 3D Landscaping designers and hortisculpturist

Hortisculpture is a three-dimensional artwork created by combining horticulture and sculpture. Typically, the ground is carved into a given shape (Human, animal, object, etc...), then the emptied space is planted with a suitable plant species. “Painting” is achieved by the plant foliage and petals colours, whereas the three-dimensional aspect is achieved by modulating the height of the plant. The variability in color tone is used to distinguish body parts and to enhance the third dimension of the artwork. . Unlike “classic” sculptures or paintings, hortisculptural artworks are dynamic over time: they grow, mature, age, and can be altered.

The technique of hortisculpture has been developed by Dr Roger Ondoua a.k.a. “Leonardo”, a graduate from McGill University and PhD in horticulture. The work of art starts with an actual picture from which a silhouette is derived. The silhouette is then broken down into different mathematical functions, hence allowing an accurate graphical representation on the ground.
